Where The Fruit Grows… a series on color complements

Mixed Media Collages on Cardstock, 8” x 11”

I have always had an obsession with rocks. I have always loved nature, trees and water in particular. Water being the most important element in my life, it seems strange that rock formations  tug at my heart. I do believe it’s the formation in general, the stacks of oddly shaped stones and pebbles, the nooks and crannies, the crevices that hold tiny enchanting organisms. In high school and college I use to dream about them, shifting sides and creaking when the wind blew. I have fallen in love with mountains, canyons, valleys of red soil, and golden plateaus in the magical desert even though I have never set foot off of the East Coast.

I try to draw them the day that I wake up from the dream. Though they are usually in black and white, I sometimes see one in color that is so bright that it’s as if it is blinding me with light. Perhaps, it is glowing in sun? Or maybe it is vibrating with life from a singular source and it is the pure aura that I think is color? There is a new form that I have been seeing, one that is very clear in my mind. I started a series a couple of weeks ago from a sketch that I did in my New Year book. I tried to keep the colors and composition the same, but adding bits of detail to add some spice. I loved doing it so much, I made two more the same day and turned it into a series. I have two small paintings in the works and sketches for a couple of bigger ones.

They show the formation in an abstract form, with all the lines and shapes to represent the cracks and crevices. Even though they are usually in black and white, the pieces are usually very balanced so I used complements in all the pieces. The solid color blocks at the bottom are the ground and the blocks above the middle represent the formation above ground, standing tall on it’s own. I probaby seem crazy, and crazier for tell you this, but I think it’s important to share where some of my inspirations come from. You probably don’t see these as I do, but I think I did a pretty damn good job creating these from my slumbervisions.
